EU Open Source Week officially kicked off on Monday, bringing Brussels to the centre of Europe’s vibrant and fast-growing open source ecosystem. From 29 January to 1 February, the city will host a packed agenda of high-profile events alongside FOSDEM (31 January – 1 February), including the Simpl Annual Community Event and the European Open Source Awards (29 January), as well as the EU Open Source Policy Summit on 30 January.
Throughout the entire week, NGI Commons will be actively represented, highlighting its role in strengthening Europe’s open, interoperable, and community-driven digital infrastructure.
The prominence of Open Source at EU level reflects a broader policy shift. The European Commission is increasingly mainstreaming Open Source across key initiatives, from the Apply AI Strategy to the upcoming European Open Digital Ecosystem Strategy, currently open for public consultation. This evolution recognises Open Source communities not just as technology providers, but as strategic actors in building digital solutions aligned with European values—openness, inclusivity, transparency, and technological sovereignty.
Open Source software and communities are now widely acknowledged as essential to reducing Europe’s dependency on foreign technology providers, while ensuring innovation remains trustworthy, sustainable, and democratically governed. Please remember that you have only a few days left (until the 3rd February 2026) to submit feedback to the European Commission’s call for evidence on the European Open Digital Ecosystem Strategy.
