The Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative projects announced their decision to discontinue the use of X social media platform, effective immediately. This strategic move aligns with NGI’s commitment to fostering an Internet that embodies European values of trust, security, and inclusion.
The NGI initiative, launched by the European Commission, aims to shape the development of the Internet into an “Internet of Humans” that responds to people’s fundamental needs and reflects the values and norms enjoyed in Europe.
Recent evaluations have raised concerns about X’s alignment with these principles, particularly regarding data privacy, user autonomy, and the spread of misinformation. In response, NGI projects have chosen to redirect their focus toward platforms and communication channels that prioritize user-centric design, transparency, and ethical standards.
NGI projects will continue to engage with their communities through channels that uphold these values, such as Mastodon and Peertube both powered by the open standard for decentralised social networking ActivityPub, ensuring stakeholders remain informed and actively involved in shaping a more human-centric Internet.

NGI Commons continues to use Mastodon and PeerTube !
Sixteen Next Generation Internet (NGI) projects are pleased to announce the transition to Mastodon and PeerTube, two European open-source platforms, for their communication and content-sharing needs. This strategic move aligns with NGI’s commitment to fostering an Internet that embodies European values of trust, security, and inclusion.
Mastodon and PeerTube are decentralised, open-source platforms designed as alternatives to traditional, centralised social media and video-hosting services. They emphasise user privacy, data ownership, and community-driven innovation, aligning with values such as openness and digital sovereignty. The decentralisation ensures that no single entity controls the entire network, promoting user autonomy and resilience against censorship.
Both are using the protocol and open standard for decentralised social networking ActivityPub. This allows users to communicate between independent Mastodon and PeerTube instances and any other ActivityPub-compatible services. This collection of independent social networking services that can communicate with each other from the Fediverse.
By adopting these platforms, NGI projects reinforce their dedication to data privacy and user control. This approach aligns with NGI’s mission to support technologies that are accessible, adaptable, and free from proprietary constraints. Mastodon and PeerTube allow users to manage their personal information and content, reducing reliance on centralized services that may exploit user data.
Strengthening European Digital Sovereignty
Utilising European-developed platforms like Mastodon and PeerTube enhances digital sovereignty, ensuring that Europe’s digital infrastructure is built on values of openness, collaboration, and respect for fundamental rights. This transition marks a significant step toward a more human-centric Internet, reflecting NGI’s vision for a trustworthy, open, and inclusive digital future.
